Pinterest is a virtual pinboard. Pinterest allows you to organize and share all the amazing things you find on the web. You can browse pinboards created by other people to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests.
People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, share their favorite recipes or everything education.
What is a pin?
A pin is an image added to Pinterest. When you put your mouse arrow over a graphic, the options appear. I can repin it (onto one of my boards). I can Like it (it will now appear in my likes) and I can comment on the pin.
When you click repin, you can pick the board you wish to pin it onto. (Note: the iPhone app doesn't let you make a new board when you pin but the computer version does.) You can type a title for what the item is. Add information to it and send it to Twitter (if you've linked it and want to.)
What is a board?
A board is a set of pins. A board can be created on any topic, such as Cool Posters, Recipes For Dinner, or Wishlist. You can add as many pins to a board as you want.
Board Set up Basics
Board Name I recommend around 28 characters. Any more and it will run off the board and a person glancing at your profile might not be able to see what you are talking about. (Note: It might take 29 characters, I was afraid to mess up my board names and that is the most I've been able to get on there without running off. Nudge me in the comments and I'll update this number.)
Board Description Tell people why you're making the board and what they can expect on the board.
Who can pin? You can invite others but they must be on pinterest.
Category. They have preset categories. This is important because a person can go to the homepage of Pinterest and browse by category. This category determines whether your pins might show up on the main pinterest feed or not. All of your boards should have a category. I'm so excited that Pinterest started off with an education category! That has helped teachers find each other.
Once you've set up your boards, you can start pinning.
What is following?
“Following All” means you'll have all of a user’s pins on all their boards shown to you in real-time on Pinterest. If the user makes new boards, you will automatically follow them.
You can follow individual boards if you're only interested in seeing a user's pins to specific boards.
You can unfollow boards and users at any time: they will not be notified.
Note: What is particularly fascinating about Pinterest is that when you follow someone, you can follow either just the person or one or more of their boards. I usually follow the person and then can unfollow specific boards on topics that don't interest me (like Tattoos or wines), I can also just follow a random person's board about iPad apps and nothing else. It lets you get very granular with your time. Think of it as if you could segment a person's Tweets and follow just their technology tweets and leave off the junk about their dog.
There are three ways to join if a friend already has a Pinterest Account
If you know someone who has an account, they can invite you but submitting your email address. The turn around time for this is all of about five seconds after your friend has submitted the form.
2. This same friend and you are friends on good old Facebook.
3. Your friend has your email address in their Yahoo or Gmail account. They can in invite you after seeing that you don't have account based upon your email address.
I have an account, now what?
I would like to say that the addiction begins. You are following other friends who share similar interest. Why not start off by taking a look at their board and seeing the boards they have created.
I found a great blog that has this amazing idea for Back-To-School-Night. I want to remember what it looks like for my classroom. How can I go about pinning/hammering this image?
You will find yourself getting lost very quickly when you start to search other boards and friends boards. Before too long, you will be on a teacher's blog reading all the amazing things he/she does in their classroom.
When you initially login to Pinterest, you will be on the Pinners You Follow page. This page will become or appealing with the more followers you gain. They most likely will pin more then what might interest you. This is always a nice introduction to what others have found on the enormous world wide web. This is an extensive list below that has some items of interest and others that I could live without. But, I take away from this the most recent items my followers pinned and what I could "pin" myself.
I have had enough looking around my friends boards and pins, I want to start to join in on the fun. How do I start to search for other pins in a certain category?
Right below the Pinterest sign, you will see several different options. You will have the option to return to the main page with the most recent pins that your followers have posted. The next option is to search within one of the 31 different categories Pinterest has to offer. Unlike Twitter categories, Pinterest has an Educational category.
Think about searching Goolge using the word Education. You will receive feedback 2,960,000,000 different websites that have this word education within the title. Pinerest takes this gigantic number and shrinks it down so that you can see a visual and a short description of the idea being presented.
Once you spot an idea, you don't want to loose it. You can pin it to an already created board. You can create a new board and add it to this new board, you can "like" it or you can add a comment to it.
What is the difference between Liking and repinning?
Liking a pin adds the image to your profile’s Likes section; the image does not get added to one of your boards.
Repinning an image allows you to categorize the image onto one of your boards. You can edit the description of a repin. The source-link of an image is saved automatically, no matter how many times it’s repinned.
Social Networking only goes as far as you want it to. Why not share the wealth and collaborate with other teachers on boards rather then following each other's boards. Recently, Susan Dee and I created a board labeled Powerful Poetry. We were both on the lookout for ideas we could bring into our 5th grade classrooms for National Poetry Month. This way, we could collaborate while searching, plus know what projects we wanted to do together.
Please, please use Mozilla Firefox when doing any sort of internet searching. Why? It is quicker, easier to use and you can add all kinds of fun things to the toolbar.
